Ravenswood iron and coal boom frames Ohio river town
The Ravenswood area longtime river trade hub shifts toward Kaiser steel plant plans with 1500 to 1700 jobs, a rolling mill employing around 2000, and coal powered aluminum production tied to Ohio Power. The town’s 1845 Ravenswood House hotel remains, serving overland clientele as steamboat traffic fades. Ballenger 4-H notes include new members and 1956 officer slate. Ottawa science note forecasts abundant natural gas petroleum and coal.
Huge Plant To Give Boost To Little Town
Ravenswood West Virginia grows from a river town to an aluminum hub as Kaiser Aluminum moves to expand with a sheet and foil mill and a major reduction plant. The project, costing about 216 million dollars, will boost capacity by over 50 percent and position Ravenswood as a leading aluminum center. Local officials predict demand for housing and services will surge, with plans for five billion dollars in homes and infrastructure as municipal water and power systems must be expanded to accommodate growth. The town, previously 1,284 residents per the July census, now faces rapid change and steps to support increased population and economic activity.

Radio Prague to Broadcast U S Christmas Programs
New York dispatch reports the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod says Radio Prague and Radio Warsaw will air American produced Christmas programs. Dr Oswald C. J. Hoffmann notes this as the first time Communist governments opened their facilities to American sponsored religious broadcasts. Poland and Czechoslovakia government agencies agreed after assurances the programs would be non political. Hoffmann says such non political broadcasts have been offered to satellite countries on Easter and Christmas. Also mentions auto travel comprising about 81 percent of U S vacation trips.

Dulles Seeks Flexible Yet Steady Foreign Aid Policy
Dulles outlined plans to provide as much foreign aid as Congress deems usable while seeking more flexibility in the spending program. The administration would keep total aid to friendly countries near 2.7 billion dollars annually. He argued this policy would support a credible peace through deterrence while pursuing eventual arms reductions with Russia. In Ontario, polio cases in 1955 hit a low since 1932, with deaths among the infected falling from 5 percent to 2.44 percent.

Families Consider Moving to Avoid Integrated Schools
In Towson Maryland two white families, the Howards of Cockeysville and the Shock family, refuse to send their children to Baltimore County schools with Black students. Court orders require attendance at the integrated local school or a move to a nonsegregated district or private schooling. Both fathers work for Baltimore County government, and the Shocks have moved to Florida to survey segregation options.
