Five Furious Air Battles Over Korea Reported
Five air battles over North Korea involved U N and Communist jets as skies cleared. The U S Fifth Air Force said two MIGs were damaged while Sabre jets were unscathed. A Sabre flight tangled with 60 MIGs over Sinanju but neither side opened fire. One F 84 Thunderjet was shot down by anti aircraft fire with the pilot rescued at sea. Allied air sweeps prior day stopped many MIGs but renewed fighting persisted on the central front where Reds attacked a U N hill position two miles southeast of Kumsong. U N forces repelled them after about three and a half hours. Sabre pilots Lt Robert Moore and Lt Charles Rhinehart were credited with hitting two MIGs.
