Land-discharge sewage plants need large spaces for minimal impact
The article explains land-discharge wastewater treatment requires vast acreage and has limited lifespan. A plant handling 80 000 gallons daily needs 95 acres, while 200 000 gallons needs 62.5 acres. For Maryland’s 300 million gallons per day, area would rival Montgomery and Prince George's counties. About 60 plants exist, with lifespans near 95 years, and phosphates saturate soil over time while crops uptake nitrogen.
