Irish bequest to teach Irish people manners sparks debate
Boyle Column reports Irish Americans dispute Mrs. Shaw's $263,000 bequest to teach Ireland "the serial graces." James McGurrin calls the idea misguided, noting Shaw and his wife found Irish public talk awkward. Bar patrons dismiss the plan as fraud and mock English tutelage, insisting the Irish need no instruction in deportment or eloquence.

Basketball Clinic By Women Officials At Hood College
The Frederick Clarity Board of Women Officials held a basketball clinic in Gambrill Gymnasium at Hood College last Saturday. Fourteen Hood girls and about 30 women and several men from Cumberland, Thurmont, Braddock Heights, Middletown and Hagerstown learned officiating basics and how to become rated officials. Catherine Foland, national judge for women's basketball officials and Hood education professor, demonstrated refereeing a mock game with Hood students, assisted by Frederick High School educator Helm Hann Bowers. Officials discussed rule interpretations, fouls, new rules, and fielded questions from prospective referees. The article also notes a Golden Rule Class gathering at Evangelical Lutheran church with officers, scripture readings, a movie on resistent bodies, a Christmas party plan, and a social period with music by Terry O'Neil and Michael Stup.
