Hay Buyers Should Take Precautions
Farmers buying hay this winter should observe several cautions says John L Crothers Jr Marketing Specialist at the University of Maryland There is no real shortage of hay and prices should not rise unless many buyers go out and beat the bushes in search of hay The real problem will be finding a supply free from pesticide residues and insect pests The European Cereal Leaf Beetle confined to Ohio Indiana and Michigan could be imported into Maryland on hay from infested areas If hay is imported buyers should demand a certificate that the hay is free from this pest Alfalfa weevil has been found in many states including Maryland Delaware Pennsylvania Tennessee Virginia and others Treatment after occurrence could eliminate much of the supply area Purchasers should stipulate in writing that the crop may not have been sprayed with chlorinated hydrocarbons and demand the right to inspect the day before payment If the seller resists negotiate with a reliable seller.
