Frederick City and County residents woke to the season’s first snow with a thin coating by midmorning and no heavy accumulation anticipated. Roads were clear by noon though slush formed westward. deer hunters reported 184 kills by midday, surpassing last year’s entire nine day season. Temperatures to fall to 19 tonight with a gusty, cold week ahead.
The Frederick Chamber of Commerce directors name the community college plan as their 1965 main project. They back state and local recommendations for 1965 legislature authorizations and appropriations, aim to publicize urgent needs, approve a 22000 budget, and push a Fair Share dues plan with targeted follow ups. Independent Fire Company found the fire already out. damage limited to the bed and bed clothes.
Salisbury AP reports Senator Harry T. Phoebus died at Peninsula General Hospital at 71 after a long Maryland political career. He led a small Republican group in the state senate for eight years and was a prominent Somerset County figure for over four decades.
Magistrate Byron W. Thompson criticizes SECA dances at the South End Civic Association building amid the Edward M. Carte trial. Carte, 23, east of Third Street, was found guilty of carrying a concealed weapon after authorities testified a hunting knife and whiskey bottle were found in his pocket at a November 20 SECA dance. He was fined 5. SECA runs weekly dances in a City of Frederick owned building leased to SECA at Burck Street and Scholl's Lane.
Maryland Magistrate Thompson asked the attorney general for guidance on drag racing tires and ruled that oversized racing slicks are not a safety hazard for street use. Chauncey P. Cramer Jr. was found not guilty of operating an unsafe motor vehicle after the AG clarified the tires pose no safety risk.
Secretary of Labor Wirtz meets today with railroads and three AFL CIO unions to avert a strike that could halt 90 percent of U S rail traffic. The unions IA Machinists IB Electrical Workers and Sheet Metal Workers seek wage and holiday/vacation improvements. The strike was postponed pending mediation.
