Summer Lingers As School Opens Amid Warm Weather

Frederick residents still feel summer with a high of 88 degrees at the Sound Source station in downtown. The National Weather Service forecasts mostly sunny skies and 80s to around 90 for Thursday, with continued dry weather through the week. Code yellow air quality is expected Wednesday per the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments.

Grants to fight practice of running red lights

The Transportation Department announced grants to 32 communities to curb running red lights, with most awards between 15000 and 20000 dollars. Howard County Maryland and Richmond Virginia received 40000 dollars each, the largest. The plan includes identifying problem areas, education programs, and a public campaign on risks. GEICO and USAir Arena Center Management Grant Division pledged support.

Maryland casino gambling faces stiff opposition from lawmakers

In Annapolis, state legislators and local officials oppose casinos ahead of task force hearings. Baltimore Mayor Schmoke and rival Clarke also oppose. Man pleads guilty to tossing brick in neighbor assault

Frederick man William Anthony Dorsey 30 pleads guilty to assault after a brick was thrown toward his downstairs neighbor Steven Ross Brown from a 20 foot porch in West South Street. Dorsey has a history of schizoid personality disorder and was in jail since Oct 14 1994. Sentencing set for Oct 30 and release deferred pending bed space at Way Station Inc.

Million-dollar suit filed over Libertytown collision

Janice Best of Mount Airy and her daughter Jennifer sue for 1.15 million in Frederick County Circuit Court after a August 13, 1992 crash on Md. 26 in Libertytown that injured the Bests and Jeanne Crawford of New Market. The suit claims Crawford ignored a stop sign and requests a jury trial.

Cold front drives cool air into Dakotas Midwest

Dry air surges into the Dakotas and Midwest behind a strong cold front. It stays steamy ahead of the front from Texas to Ohio with thunderstorms along the front from Kansas to Michigan. The South remains hot and sticky while the Northwest stays dry and the Southwest stays sunny and hot. Baltimore Pickup Attack Charged as Attempted Murder

A 20 year old Baltimore man, Ernest Sharp, was charged with three counts of attempted murder after allegedly driving a pickup onto a sidewalk to strike three teenagers outside a bar. Two teens remained hospitalized Tuesday as Sharp was held for a bail review. Police spokesman Rob Weinhold said investigators believe the act was intentional.
