Boys turn drainage area into field of dreams

In Walkersville a dozen Glade Manor boys converted a stormwater field into a backyard baseball diamond with cardboard outfield markers and lime batters. They played dozens of games, tracked stats, and debated home run counts as their makeshift field grew from a father’s move of a diamond.

BoE urged to stay with six year construction plan

Parents and community members urged the Frederick County Board of Education to proceed with the superintendent’s six year plan for construction and renovation. Speakers supported projects including Gov. Thomas Johnson Middle School and a new campus to relieve Yellow Springs Elementary crowding. The plan totals 174 million dollars across 1997 and 1998–2002 with a 31 million request for 1997.

Machete Murder Found Frederick Resident Near Elmwood Terrace

Frederick Police report the mutilated body of Francisco Hernandez, 34, was found near Elmwood Terrace Apartments after a sidewalk attack with a machete. Found by William Maynard and Catherine Johnson at about 4 20 a m, Hernandez lay face down with lungs exposed. A suspect is identified and an arrest is imminent, Lt Tom Chase says.

NATO readies continued air campaign against Serbs in Bosnia

U.S. and NATO officials reviewed bomb footage from the heaviest strikes to date near Sarajevo and said the attack damaged a major Bosnian Serb ammunition depot and radar and missile sites. About 48 of 60 NATO aircraft contributed. Aviano and USS Theodore Roosevelt crews prepared for further strikes. Admiral Leighton Smith stated the intent to show capability for greater damage if escalated.

Detrick Welcomes New Commander At Change of Command

Fort Detrick held a ceremony as Col. Henry Tuell III became the 31st commander, taking over from Col. Merle Snyder who moves to a Pentagon role. Snyder praised the troops and thanked the Frederick community and families. Both men served as medevac pilots in Vietnam and Tuell is highly decorated with Silver Star and Bronze Star among others.

Kendall takes Linaganore association helm in new direction

Former Frederick City Hall aide John Kendall returns to leadership as Lake Linganore Association manager after the board ousted long-time chief Mulligan. Directors cite cleaning up lawsuits and roads issues, aiming to refresh the group’s image with new management and a unified team approach. Kendall says he seeks mutual trust and a strong role. Salary not disclosed, but at least $45,000.

Double dipper may have to quit Brunswick water post

Paul Cook, a retired Brunswick High biology teacher, may be forced to quit his job at the Brunswick wastewater plant after the state attorney general deemed him a bona fide double dipper. Officials say he saves the city up to $20,000 yearly in fees, while Bruns wick scrambles to retain his testing services. The earnings limit restricts retirees from taking another government job while drawing a pension. Continued on Page A-4.
