President Clinton frames the 21st century agenda during the final campaign phase in Chicago. He pledges the best days for America in a hoarse acceptance tone as delegates await tonight's climactic session. Hillary Clinton says he is fired up and resolute about plans and the next term.
Democratic congressional candidate Stephen Crawford spent time in Chicago for the Democratic National Convention appearing on radio and TV newscasts back home in rural Western Maryland. He is challenging Republican Roscoe Bartlett in the 6th District.
Frederick officials approve an ordinance making it illegal to feed ducks geese and fowl in and around Baker Park Culler Lake and Carroll Creek. The measure aims to curb the growing mixed population after resident complaints about health and safety concerns municipal infractions carry fines.
The city will vote on a pending ordinance at the Sept 12 meeting of the mayor and Board of Aldermen with a cap of $100. Aldermen discuss enforcement challenges and safety upgrades at East and 16th streets, while a four way light remains budget-excluded for now. Fort Detrick officials honored a dark bay gelding named First Flight a 28 year old thoroughbred for his role in developing a botulinum antitoxin. From 1978 to 1992 his blood yielded over 1600 liters used to create more than 2500 doses shipped to Saudi Arabia as deterrence during the Persian Gulf conflict. The antidote later treated over 50 patients in Egypt in 1991 with all recovering, marking a notable scientific achievement amid war fears.
A hearing at Monocacy Middle School in Frederick drew a handful of parents who backed increasing the Frederick County Public Schools Capital Improvements Program to relieve crowding.
