Livers from female donors fail more often in transplants
Pittsburgh researchers report the largest study on liver transplants finding female donor livers fail more often, especially in male recipients. The 2,376 transplants from 1987 to 1993 show 45 percent failure for female-to-male cases versus 28 percent for male-to-male, with female recipients also faring worse with female livers. Experts caution the cause remains unknown and note hormonal or fatty tissue factors may play a role.
