Frederick Tabler keeps gardening past eight decades despite droughts
Frederick resident Mr. Tabler, born November 19, 1908, has tended a garden for over 80 years. He started helping at age 10 on a family farm, later farmed in Maryland, then worked for Soil Conservation. Now at his home he gardens through droughts, weeds, and rodents, watering little, pulling weeds for hours weekly, and canning beans and cherries for family and neighbors. His 300 by 40 foot plot yields corn, beans, sweet potatoes, broccoli, kale, melons, and more, with sweeter fruit in dry years. He plans to continue gardening as long as he can walk.
