McKeldin Under Fire Over Highway Access Plan
Maryland garden club leader accuses state officials of a gross breach of faith by removing access restrictions on U S 301 part of the Blue Star Memorial Highway route. Mrs. William T. Hamilton Jr. of Hagerstown cites highway plan changes, recalls Gov. McKeldin’s dedication speech, and questions a possible deal with Southern Maryland senators while condemning the move as harmful to the living memorial and taxpayers’ investment. The controversy centers on the Roads Commission ruling freeing 301 from controlled access, conflicting with prior commitments and legislative action.
