Blood test aims to detect cancer in early stages
Scientists at John Wayne Cancer Institute report a blood test that detects a tumor-associated antigen to flag recurrences of melanoma and other cancers. In 105 post surgery melanoma patients, 69 percent showed the marker before recurrence. 33 patients had negative tests despite recurrence, and 10 to 15 percent of positives did not relapse over a decade. The test also appeared in healthy and cancer groups, showing 50 percent positivity in cancer patients versus 3 percent in healthy individuals.
