About 1,000 people attended the Utica picnic on 25 acres in Miller's Woods Lewistown. The menu read like a battalion supply list with 1,000 pounds of chicken 46 country hams 95 pounds of pepper slaw 46 gallons of potato salad 48 gallons of green beans and more. Lucille Putman who has run the event for 30 years estimated 800 to 900 dinners would be served and attendance reached the 1,000 mark.

Hubble warnings unheeded clash over flawed mirror probe
Hartford Courant reports Perkin-Elmer optical division chief scientist Roderic Scott retired early after urging independent testing and arguing for more checks on the Hubble Space Telescope mirror. An internal test was abandoned for time and cost, a likely detector of the flaw. The orbiting telescope, launched in April, faces focus issues. NASA plans a 1992 shuttle mission to fix it.
