Minorities Promoted to Top Frederick County School Posts

Minorities won five of the 12 open Frederick County school administration positions this year, the highest share in years. Superintendent Dr. Noel T. Farmer Sr. cited strong minority applications and qualifications, noting the promotions were earned for ability and certification.

Unopposed state senators Derr and Smelser seek re election

Incumbent state senators John W. Derr and Charles H. Smelser run unopposed in the September 11 primary and November 6 general election. Smelser, 70, of Unionville is president of New Windsor State Bank and a retired farmer. Derr, 49, from Braddock Heights, is with Frederick Underwriters. Both represent Frederick County districts and stress growth, taxes, gas prices, schools, and roads.

Guardians move in at Sagner housing complex

The Guardian Angels set up a headquarters in Sagner housing development PA Avenue. Charlie H. Smith Jr of the Frederick housing authority welcomed the group for a month to month stay with $1 rent and space for an office and sleeping area. Residents donated furniture and food as four Angels move in led by Robert Whiteside to begin limited patrols and a recruitment drive at the community center.
