Eight year sentence for sex crimes against sheep
Richard Eugene Schwarzmann, 30, of Emmitsburg, was given an eight year term for attempts at perverted sexual acts involving sheep at Rose Hill Manor Children’s Museum in Frederick. He previously escaped a Washington DC halfway house where he served an eight year sentence for second degree rape. The case drew on prior convictions and a mental evaluation indicating need for intensive inpatient treatment and monitoring.

Stagecoach crash injures 16 at River Valley Ranch
A replica Western stagecoach at River Valley Ranch in northeastern Carroll County overturned after horses reared during last runs. Sixteen people aboard were injured, with two ranch employees flown to Shock Trauma in Baltimore in serious but stable condition. The remaining riders suffered minor injuries and were treated at Carroll County General Hospital. Paramedic units from Carroll, Baltimore and York counties responded.

NPS moves to condemn land near Appalachian Trail in Frederick County
The National Park Service has begun condemnation to acquire several parcels in Frederick County adjacent to the Appalachian Trail to protect the trail atop South Mountain. Parcels include 7.19 acres once owned by Ann Hilleary, 10.94 acres to unknown heirs of John R. Burroughs, and 7.52 acres once owned by the late David Arnold. Heirs may respond to be heard. otherwise a U S District Court judge may grant title.

Thurmont police officer Anthony Weddle was slightly injured early Wednesday while stopping a burglary at the Cozy Restaurant. He was conducting routine checks around 4 a.m. when the double doors breached as two men fled, knocking him into a wall in the restaurant parking lot.
