Berlin reports Kavne fortress captured by storm after heavy resistance by Italians. Albert Merritt, a 30 year old Camden resident and former four and a half year employee of the Adams Express Company, is sought on embezzlement charges involving $8000 intended for a Camden to Philadelphia bank route. The money vanished from the company’s money room after Merritt’s car trip. Merrill was arrested in Boston Massachusetts and North Adams, with $15 on him at arrest.
Galveston reports eighty deaths from the storm that battered the coast, with Fourteen soldiers among the casualties. The city faced massive damage to houses and the sea wall, while Fort Crockett camp was wiped out. Port Arthur, Beaumont, and Texas City also suffered, with widespread homelessness and infrastructure failures.
Amsterdam reports Dutch troops fired on a German Zeppelin flying over Dutch territory as four Zeppelins were seen over the islands of Vileland and Wieringer on the Netherlands coast. An Allied order for 75,000 shells was placed with Standard Steel Car Co. in New Castle, Pennsylvania, with work to begin in about two weeks.
