German forces breach Russian lines from the Narew to the Bug river and invest Novo Georgievsk as battles widen. Hindenburg and Buclow fronts advance, Russians retreat. Novo Georgievsk fortress now surrounded amid heavy prisoner captures. Also report of a deadly skylight fall in Philadelphia when a woman died after plunging through a roof skylight.
Washington reports depict a dramatic border crisis as U S troops reinforce Texas, Carranza denial persists, and Mexican raids prompt military moves. Twenty sixth infantry sails to Brownsville with medical and support units, while a second aeroplane section heads to reinforce the border. A U S cavalry patrol engaged fire near Rio Grande outpost Progreso with Mexicans reportedly crossing into Texas in small groups towards Hidalgo county.
A mob of about fifty armed men abducted Leo M. Frank from Milledgeville prison and lynched him near Marietta two miles east of the town. Frank had been convicted of the Mary Phagan murder. His body hung from a tree limb. wrists secured, no bullet wound detected. Guards were held at bay during the assault as the mob sped to Marietta. The case had drawn national attention and left Frank’s guilt debated amid strong sentiment.
