In south central Kansas thrashing shifts from coal to natural gas, cutting crews from many to a few. Modern self feeding machines and centralized packing reduce labor, while growers save time and the farmer's wife gains relief from cooking for large thrashing parties.
California coinage before 1856 was a foreign mix with heavy silver and gold imports. Moffit & Co issued gold coins, foreigners dominated circulation, and the twenty franc piece traded above its face value. Bank discounts drove foreign coins out by 1856, saloon owners profited, and paper money appeared with D O Mills & Co. Gold dust and Odd octagon notes shaped 1860s finance as Wells Fargo rose.
