Canal hike tests limits of aging club hikers
In Brunswick a group of 48 C and O Canal Association members shared a rugged 184 mile trek from Cumberland to Georgetown to honor the late Justice William O Douglas. The highly seasoned hikers, ages up to 85, faced barbed wire, rough paths, and sunburn as they aim to complete the route every five years. They travel light yet carry stories of the canal and its founder, with jokes about amped up sunscreen and stubborn trails.
