Trade dispute with Japan looms over Nakasone visit
The Reagan administration said a major trade conflict over $300 million in tariffs on Japanese computers and other goods was unlikely to be resolved before Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone’s April 30 White House visit. Emissary Shintaro Abe held talks with Vice President Bush and Secretary Shultz as both sides sought a friendly settlement while warning a breakthrough by April 30 was doubtful.

Yeutter says tariffs won't derail Japan US ties
U S trade representative Clayton Yeutter said new tariffs on some Japanese goods are a small blip and should not cloud the broader economic and political ties. He pressed Japan to boost imports, drop quotas, and expand the market for U S and Japanese products while noting the need to address individual trade issues rather than rely on a broad solution.
