Tamil rebels attacked an army camp near Jaffna, killing 14 soldiers and three policemen while a bus station bombing in Colombo left at least 106 confirmed dead. Government airstrikes hit Tamil positions as violence climbed across the island, with curfews and prison unrest reported in Colombo.
Frederick drug network kingpin David R. Wolfe, 42, a Commerce Department employee, was arrested with over $10,000 cash during a Logan Street raid conducted by state, county, and city police. Investigators say the operation involved Florida drug runs, cocaine sold locally, and Wolfe as a financial backer. Two Logan Street associates face upcoming charges. Mrs. Ambrosia Clarke known as Mother Clarke for decades of aid to hospitalized servicemen died Tuesday at 91. She visited Carl Kimbrough Army Hospital Fort Meade Bethesda Naval Hospital and Walter Reed Army Medical Center earning praise from Presidents from Roosevelt to Reagan. Mount Airy mayor Linda Boyer says she is examining the feasibility of annexing Mount Airy out of Frederick County due to what she calls a lack of financial assistance. About 1,000 residents live in Frederick County within the town, while the rest are in Carroll County. She alleges the county cares only for the portion in Frederick County and notes the town was denied a $15,000 grant for a third state trooper. She plans to appeal and has asked Carroll County to study the move, though she warns it will be tough.
