Chancellor says UM evolved from a school into university

University of Maryland College Park began in 1856 as an agricultural school and has since grown into a university with national respect, according to Chancellor John B. Slaughter. He urged academic excellence, inclusion, and reduced red tape, noting desegregation and rising private grants as signs of progress.

County approves cost cuts to curb health care rise

Frederick County commissioners adopt measures to ease Blue Cross rates for next year. They raise employee health care deductible from 100 to 200, add a dental plan, require second or third opinions for surgeries, and push outpatient options when possible to limit costs. A single 50,000 claim was excluded to temper an 8.8 percent rate increase versus a 12 percent projection. Commissioner Bollinger notes future rises may still occur due to the dental plan.

County rates may be reduced by Blue Cross refund claim

Bollinger argues the county could face a smaller refund if Blue Cross-Blue Shield withholds a $50,000 claim in rate calculations, potentially lowering next year’s refund from $100,000 to $50,000. Davia Rice
