Resignation of Dulles Hard Hit Western Diplomacy
Resigning Secretary of State John Foster Dulles leaves a void in Western diplomacy after 32 years of service, with no clear successor. The loss affects upcoming foreign ministers talks and the May conference, as the United States faces a six month delay before a new secretary is fully in place, complicating summit prospects with the Soviet bloc. Also in this issue a Frederick County physician Dr Ira Beall, 93, longtime Libertytown practitioner, died after a long career beginning in 1853. Funeral details are provided.

Dulles Struggled to Shape Cold War Initiatives Abroad
President Eisenhower appointed John Foster Dulles as secretary of state six years into the Cold War, but his tenure saw crises from Lebanon to Jordan and Iraq. He expanded US alliances worldwide, extended commitments in Asia and the Middle East, and developed a Congress-friendly authority to act swiftly in crises. His Suez stance and defense of Nationalist China drew mixed global reactions.
