Gardeners start spring with tiny rows and big yields
Harry and Mildred Ruffin, a St Louis couple, plant in two 5 by 20 foot raised beds and a narrow bed, yielding cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, beans, and fall crops. They donate half the harvest to food pantries. Raised beds warm soil, improve drainage, and reduce weed pressure, letting them build their own soil atop a community plot on vacant lots.
