Rain Helps Farmers But More Rain Is Urgently Needed

County farmers welcome this week s rain as a relief to soils and water supplies though experts call it only a drop in the bucket. Soil Conservationist Charles E Ware notes the rain saturates the soil with little runoff and will benefit alfalfa and oats planted early by farmers, while extension agent Kenneth E Shifflet stresses the need for substantial rainfall to replenish the lowered water table and support ongoing field work.

Rain brings relief to farmers across the county

Farmers cheer heavy rainfall that came after a long dry spell. Despite optimism, officials note it will take three to four months for water tables to rise and springs to refill. Vegetation and pastures will benefit, but alfalfa and small grain harvests still need more rain.
