Baltimore businessmen thwarted consumer protection bill in Maryland
In the 1966 Maryland legislature the House passed a consumer protection bill to create an office within the attorney general to prosecute deceptive sellers. The Senate killed the measure amid charges that Baltimore interests blocked protections for shoppers and critics questioned the Baltimore Better Business Bureau's opposition. The session also saw bills to curb high interest loans and prohibit minimum price fixing die in the Senate, despite House approval.
