AP writer Bob Thomas reports Lauritz Melchior, 74, speaking at his mountaintop chalet about planned marriage on May 23 to Mary Markham, 40, a television producer and former secretary. He says he lived alone for a year and desired a companion for his sunset years.
The article describes the singer Melchior as youthful with a Wagnerian girth, planning a Hawaii honeymoon before hunting ice bears in Norway. He discusses refurbishing a Mulholland Drive home to suit his new family, while his fiancée, Miss Markham, jokes about the forthcoming arrangement. The bride-to-be has a 3-year-old son from a previous marriage, whom Lauritz says he gets along with.
The veteran baritone Melchior, now a grandfather, notes his fondness for children and slow in recent years. He began opera in 1913 and sang 512 times at the Metropolitan Opera House, missing only three engagements, before turning to rest.
