Supreme Court upholds most radio and TV giveaways
The Supreme Court ruled most giveaway programs legal unless they require contestants to contribute money or something of value. The decision curbs FCC attempts to ban such programs and states that the agency overstepped its rulemaking power. Chief Justice Warren led seven justices in the ruling with Justice Douglas not participating. Network officials in New York welcomed the decision, saying current policies remain unchanged. NBC, CBS, and ABC had sought to uphold the special court ruling and the Court affirmed it.
