Only Woman Freemason Elizabeth St Leger Initiated in 1735
The Scottish Masonic Historical Directory reports the sole woman admitted to Freemasonry: Elizabeth St Leger, daughter of Lord Doneraile, later Mrs Richard Aldworth. Initiated under Lodge Doneraile 44 in 1735 after witnessing a lodge through a wall earlier, she faced execution by some members but accepted the Masonic ordeal of death and was made a member. She died 1778 aged 80 and is memorialized in Doneraile and Cork. Col Richard Willam Aldworth, a descendant, died 1890. Mystic Shrine reference in New York Sun.
