Farmer reports rapid lichen growth damaging property
Local farmer Pat Zimmerman says unusual lichens spread rapidly across trees, walks, foundations, and structures on her Ballenger Creek Pike farm. She cites lack of expert attention from county and state offices, while extension staff and Smithsonian lichenologist Mason Hale acknowledge lichens but question the alleged explosive growth and follow up.

Study finds no link between Eastalco fluoride and health
A two year study around Eastalco Aluminum Co Buckeystown shows no correlation between fluoride emissions and human health. It measured fluoride in teeth and body fluids of residents within five miles and noted vegetation and cattle fluoride monitoring since operations began. The report circulated by Frederick County and Johns Hopkins public health teams will be discussed at a fluoride commission meeting April 14 in Winchester Hall.

Wake-up and Reminder service idea falls flat
Kim Blair, a Frederick housewife, tried launching a wake-up and reminder business to earn extra money. She faced crank calls and jokes instead of genuine requests, despite plans to charge $1 daily for wake-ups and $3 per occasion for reminders, and praise from a county aging office for potential referrals.

Two area farms named for preservation districts in Frederick County
Frederick County Agricultural Preservation advisory board recommended approving two dairy farms for preservation districts. Galen and Jane Strite’s 100 acre farm near Old Middletown Road and Edgar and Helen Van Fossen’s 130 acre farm near Auburn Road and Baugher Road were endorsed. A third farm proposal by Samuel and Stella Kemp was tabled to May for easement policy discussions. The board also approved nearby district changes and set a county hearing for April 16 for two other applications, with the next advisory meeting planned for May 7 at Winchester Hall.
