State Sales Taxes Reach Enormous Sam
State sales tax collections topped $1.5 billion last year, up nearly threefold from pre war levels. Growth came from new taxes in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maryland, and Tennessee, higher prices, and strong purchasing, though the rise shows signs of slowing. California led with $29.9 million. Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Washington, and Indiana also posted large yields. Connecticut cut its rate to four percent last April and collected $30 million in 1948. Maryland, Rhode Island, Tennessee also reported sizable figures. More than 40 orchid species grow in some states.
