County rescue officials say river rescues are suspended as statewide regulations take effect. Frederick County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association President Charlie E. ana notes administration actions behind the pause. Continued on Page A-4.
A Mexicana Airlines Boeing 727 crashed into El Carbon peak near Mexico City killing 106 aboard. Mexicana officials later confirmed five Americans and two Canadians among the dead, with 158 passengers and eight crew. Rescue teams recovered bodies, searched for flight recorders, and began transporting remains to regional hospitals as authorities investigate possible pressurization problems.
The Budget and Taxation Committee nixed the Frederick delegation request for 3 million in state bonds for Weinberg Center renovations and 200 thousand for Carroll Creek projects. It did allocate 100 thousand in bonds for Middletown water system improvements and 200 thousand to help Brunswick address erosion near Potomac Street. House Appropriations has not released its capital list yet. Frederick County leaders planned to press Appropriations chairman for funding approval.
Snyder, a 51-year-old Republican with 2 years as Frederick County sheriff and six years on the Frederick barracks, tells reporters at the Frederict County Adel Detention Center he has lived up to all 1982 campaign promises. He cites ongoing efforts to streamline the office and improve taxpayer information, praises interagency cooperation, and defends his stance amid a prior controversy over sheriff's department remodeling that was halted by the county commissioners.
Weather records show April rainfall well below normal and March the driest in 15 years. Firefighters report rapid onset of grass and brush fires as warm spell from March 11 to 15 leaves only traces of moisture, warning that small blazes could quickly grow out of control.
Frederick officials estimate measures could save about 1 million gallons daily. A 18 month trial in 120 homes and leaks found in many households spurred plan to expand monitoring and check plumbing for leaks. The city plans a new treatment plant and possible expansion with state approval projected within a decade.
