Newell Area Paves Main Street and Highways in 1938
In 1936 Buena Vista County voters approved funding for Newell paving projects with strong mayoral backing. Mayor Rogers led multiple visits to the Iowa Highway Commission in Ames to push No. 5 pavement between Fonda and Storm Lake, aided by Newell businessmen. Main Street paving completed in 1938 sparked a celebration with speeches by Charles Hacke and Senator A. J. Shaw, plus a dance and ice cream social. A ribbon-cutting at Radio Park in Storm Lake marked the Newell to Storm Lake road completion, with Governor Kraschell speaking and O. B. Rogers as toastmaster. Blacktop expansion continued in 1948 and 1950.
