Newell Chronicle Marks Early 20th Century Growth
Newell merchants kept long hours before 1911 and mostly closed 6:30 p.m. on most days. In 1913 D L Hoefle became jeweler and installed a gasoline powered fan. The Motorcycle Co opened. P J Sandburg praised for 1914 graduation photo. By 1916 two motor trucks appeared, the Farm er's Co paid rebates, and new leaders formed a commercial club later named Newell Community Club. Electric lights arrived, street improvements continued, and a sanitary sewer system was installed. War 1917 spurred patriotic displays and mass mobilization with 180 township registrants and a growing Red Cross chapter.
