Announcement from La Grande reports the marriage of George Jett and Miss Beulah Blum at the Presbyterian parsonage with Rev. Lane officiating. The couple revealed plans by arriving at the depot for a celebratory welcome and hosted a reception at the groom’s parents home on Fourth Street.
Mrs. D D Coulson entertained a large company of ladies at tea on Tuesday afternoon at her Hancock street home. The decor featured dahlias and ferns, with guests taking turns composing telegrams of a special letter count. Mrs. Oliver Evans won the first prize, and assistants included Mrs. Fordyce and several others.
The Coburg Journal reports Rev George F Round, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church, will retire at the Ashland conference after fifty years in the gospel ministry. Born in 1840 in Georgia, he began in Ashville North Carolina and concluded his pastorate in Coburg Oregon. He taught mathematics and Greek in North Carolina and ran a school in South Carolina. Notable pupils included future Governor John G Evans and U S senator Frank Gary. In Oregon he led churches in Albany McMinnville Newberg and several other towns before planning to settle with friends in Newberg.
A Methodist church reception in Newberg honored outgoing pastor Rev Reuter and incoming Rev Skipworth. Attendees from other denominations praised Reuter as he prepares to move to Lewiston Idaho. Skipworth, welcomed warmly, will move into the parsonage immediately.
The Newberg Commercial Club announces a lecture series for farmers and gardeners, featuring speakers from the Agricultural College. Dr. Withycomb opens with Diversified Farming, followed by Professor Gardner on Fruit Culture and Spraying, then Lewis on Soil, Bouquet on Gardens, with stock and poultry talks planned for January. Attendance urged. dates to be announced.
Mrs. L. M. Smith hosted a Friday dinner party for herself with many lady friends. Guests enjoyed a simple, homey meal and friendly exchanges before departing, with compliments and well wishes. Attending were Mesdames C. C. Ferguson, James Ferguson, L. B. Ferguson, James McGuire, Elza Hadley, N. Oliver, Jack Morebach, H. R. Morris and Miss Amy Harger.
The Presbyterian church hosts a farewell reception for Rev. and Mrs. John F. Lyons on Friday evening October 4, 1912. Members of the church congregation and friends are invited.
The Presbyterian Christian Endeavor group and guests enjoyed a two hour hayrack ride to the country north of town. Afterward they gathered at the Langworthy home for light refreshments and a sing, with numerous local youths listed as attendees and chaperoned by Mrs. William Hurlston. This kicks off a series of C E events inviting nonmembers and Presbyterian youths to join the club.
A Newberg crowd gathered at Friends church Wednesday evening to hear W. G. McLaren of Portland discuss rescue work in Oregon. He warned youths and parents about weekend trips to Portland and urged support for the Louise Home for girls.
Friends Church holds Rally Day Sunday October 6 at 10 am with Bible School, 11 am preaching on The Church Militant, basket dinner in the basement, and a 2 pm roll call service.
The Star Theatre screens Thou Shall Not Covet a Vitagraph comedy with Bunny as a loving husband to Lilian Walker’s extravagant wife and The Empty Grave a melodrama from Pnthe American. Also The Stronger Mind from Selig and Brave Braver Bravest from Lubin, plus Wanted a Baby. Next week The Pathé Weekly on Monday and Tuesday with current events, admission five and ten cents.
