Major Fire Destroys Newberg Hardware and Nearby Structures
A Friday night blaze on First Street destroyed the Newberg Hardware and Plumbing Co building, the Gem Theater, the Commercial Livery barn, and the David Johnson barn. All but a rescued cinema reel were lost. one horse perished in a box stall. Firefighters and volunteers prevented spread beyond the block, saving surrounding shops and delaying further damage. Estimated losses include the hardware stock and building, livery barn, and related property with partial insurance.

Mrs J D Gordon hosted a September 26 reception for the Women's Society of the Presbyterian church at 709 Sheridan Street. Newberg Ladies Attend State W C T U Convention
Four Newberg ladies joined the State W C T U meeting in Corvallis with 203 delegates. Rev Edith Hill Booker won state president by a large majority and a state dry campaign for 1914 was unanimously approved. A Newberg local union meeting is set for October 8 at 2 30 p m at Frances E Matthews 402 College Street with convention echoes and refreshments.

Lady kills bear in mountain hunt with 22 caliber
Mrs. Hoyt of Washington county alone faced a 100 pound bear in the mountains. She fired from a fir tree then carried the carcass a half mile to her home. Her husband is Clarence Hoyt, brother of L M Hoyt, and she is praised by Hillsboro friends for bravery.
