Bell’s force cleared Florida Blanca to Porac area, capturing nine cavalry and property. Bell suffered one killed and two wounded.
The Call reports San Francisco will cease to be the Pacific Coast steamship center on January 1 as the Great Northern Railway gains control of the steamship company and moves local interests to Seattle. Goodall Perkins Co. loses agency and closes books to complete the transfer by the appointed date. New York dispatches note VP Hobart’s retirement would force the Republican convention to pick a new running mate for McKinley if renominated.
Dispatches report Boer forces mounting heavy guns to the north and northeast of Ladysmith while 1,500 Boers are seen moving south. Ladysmith residents flee as defense works are built around the town and naval guns are expected. Mafeking bombardment deemed harmless with shells fired. Cronje’s forces withdraw after delaying actions.
