Washington Oct 28 The annual report of Commissioner Hermann estimates survey needs for the coming year in Oregon Washington and Idaho. It calls for grazing charges on forest reserves 8 to 10 cents per head for cattle 1 to 2 cents per head for sheep in the Cascade reserve and 5 dollars per thousand in Rainier. It urges leasing rights for lands within reserves and authorizing entry of lands more valuable for coal. It notes a total of 929 808 068 acres of unappropriated and reserved public lands in the United States.
New York October 28 Chauncey M Depew announces the will of Cornelius Vanderbilt making Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt the main heir and head of the family The will leaves Alfred a large share and sets up trusts while earmarking substantial sums for Cornelius and siblings Gladys Reginald and Gertrude each about 7 5 million The statement notes Alfred will gift about 6 million to Cornelius to equalize wealth among brothers and sisters

Since then no word. A $100 reward is offered for his arrest. The defalcation shocks friends. the money is tax revenue from the past two months.
War department received word that Lieutenant Robert D. Carmody, who went to Guam with a marine battalion on the Yosemite, is missing at sea between Guam and Manila. Carmody reportedly boarded at Guam, possibly ill, while en route home. Authorities fear he may have jumped overboard while delirious.
Port Said reports the US transport Missouri anchored en route to Manila carrying medical supplies and several nurses. Helen Gould of New York donates 6000 dollars to the League for Social Service for a crusade against Mormonism. The league plans 1,000,000 pamphlets and blank petitions distributed to 50,000 clergymen nationwide.
