The twenty third assembly of Oregon Yearly Meeting of Friends Church convened in Newberg with reduced attendance but strong zeal. Delegates from California Kansas Ohio Washington and Indiana attended. A peace resolution to President Wilson and several oratorical and educational sessions highlighted the four day meeting.

Longtime community member John T. Smith dies after cancer
John T. Smith died after a two year battle with cancer, shocking his many friends. A Newberg resident since 1976 he was a charter member of the Newberg Friends church and active in religious educational and business circles. He was born in 1866 in Iowa, married twice and survived by family including Rebecca Webb Hinch and an adopted daughter. His funeral followed at the local cemetery he helped establish, with pallbearers named F A Morris J C Colcord J H Rees Jesse Edwards J L Hoskins and B H Woodward.

Newberg Plans Big Fourth of July Celebration
Preparations for a July 3 celebration in Newberg under Moose Lodge No 640 include races for prizes, a St Paul versus Dayton ball game, balloon ascension, parachute jump, high dive, Ferris wheel, merry-go-round, and other free attractions. Committee members are P. P. Hawkins C. H. Coe and C. R. Chapin.

Swiss National Arnold Bragger Found Dead in Barn
Mrs Bragger discovered the body of Arnold Bragger a Swiss national during a noon meal routine and summoned help. A coroner was called and a Swiss letter found on him was sent to McMinnon for interpretation.
