The diary describes relocating a boys school to a new compound, salve teachers moving in, growing tomato plants started by students, and plans for English classes. It covers repair work, discipline over milk theft, villagers under mission oversight, and anticipation of new missionaries arriving to assist at the station.
To every woman of Newberg and vicinity the federation announces the annual Red Letter Day on Wednesday January 26. The event at the Commercial Club rooms features a short program light refreshments and a social time. Attendees are asked to bring fancy work and a silver offering. By order of the club presidents.
The Newberg Farmers Club held a Saturday meeting led by D. V. Fendall with a pruning demonstration. They discussed fertilizer and backed a county agricultural agent. Plans for an all day February 5 meeting were announced, with reminders to prepare lunch baskets.
Portland officers helped by locals searched Lee Duncan’s Hanson place north of town for moonshine and mule but found 24 quarts of homemade beer and no still. The beer was destroyed and Duncan promised not to brew again.
A young Canadian lecturer, Stanley Nelson Daney, known for wartime propaganda work and travels in South America and Europe, will lecture at Wood-Mar Hall on The Real League of Nations Uncle Sam and John Bull. The New York Sun praised his powerful, fluent speaking and persuasive appeal to Americans and Canadians.
The Star Theater resumes with a Friday opening after seat delays. The film Kismet stars Otis Skinner as Hajj and runs about two hours on 10 reels, with first show at 7:15 pm. Tickets cost 15 and 25 cents.
A 15 year old boy, son of Wm. Schick, was accosted by a masked robber on a country road beyond city limits. The bandit displayed a pistol, demanded money, found only a half-dollar, cursed the youth, and sent him into deep mud as punishment for lying. The incident underscores local fears of bold thief activity after dark.
A Baptist church crowd heard Judge Kanzler addressing the prohibition anniversary with remarks on delinquency and broken homes. He urged strong family oversight and praised the State W C T U plans for a home for dependent children as vital for future citizenship.
Robert Parker Miles spoke last week at Wood Mar Hall delivering a dramatic lecture titled Tallow-Dips. The narrative highlighted his rise from a penniless youth to success in New York and vivid character sketches of Gladstone Theodore Roosevelt Pope Leo XIII and Newell Dwight Hillis.
On Monday evening January 24 Prof Alexander Hull and Mrs Eva Hull present college and high school pupils in piano voice and string trios. An invitation to attend.
A Friday evening program at the Springbrook school house will raise funds for starving European children. Refreshments will be sold after the show and admission costs 15 and 25 cents. Committee assures the program is worth the money.
A Friends church supper at 802 Edwards Street honored Mrs. Louisa Painter Round on her eightieth birthday. Attendees included many local elderly residents with ages from 34 to 89, plus Rev. George F. Round and Rev. and Mrs. Fred E Carter.
In a Friday night home game Pacific College defeated Pacific University of Forest Grove 32 to 11. Leater Wright starred with 24 of the 32 points for Pacific College while both teams played solid ball and few fouls were called. Gawley of the Portland Y M C A refereed the contest.
The Oregon Growers' Cooperative association held its January 10 election in Salem. Directors chosen from Jackson, Josephine, Douglas, Lane, Linn, Benton, Marion, Polk, Yamhill, Washington, and Clackamas Multnomah groups include Howard A. Hill, C. C. Cate, Gordon Voorhies, A. H. Davenhill, Clyde E. Niles, W. E. St. John, R. A. Busenbark, G. W. Riddle, M. H. Harlow, B. W. Johnson, Chas. L. McNary, Allan Bellinger, Seymour Jones, Fred Ewing, H. S. Butz, Kenneth Miller, George Zimmerman, E. W. Matthews, B E. A. Better, C. A. Jacques, and Fred Groner as Delegate at Large.
W D Burlingham 65 manager and part owner of Dayton Box and Lumber was killed when his car plunged 60 feet from a bridge at Dayton city limits. He died of head injuries shortly after the wreck leaving a widow who operates a hospital in McMinnville.
George Himes presented a stereoptical talk at Wood-Mar Hall on pioneer life in the Northwest. Prof. Perisho and Hubert Armstrong operated the stereopticon while Himes described early travel and farm life, celebrating Yamhill county pathfinders and Oregon statehood foundations. The 77-year-old historian recalled names and dates, entertaining both young and old.
Silver wedding anniversary celebrated Saturday evening January 15 at 615 North Meridian Street. Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Langton entertained Newberg friends and former North Dakota neighbors in Chehalem valley with reminiscences, refreshments, and music. Attendees included J. D. Gordon, Tom Patterson, M. Reed, Geo. Lutz, Dave Johnson, Frank Johnson, Pierson, Ed. Harvey, and Mina Langton.
Thelma Maud Morgan of Newberg wed Jacob Martin Wilson of Newberg. Irma Alice Jones of Carlton married Carl Paul Hoffman of Portland.
