Sunshiners Hostesses Share Readings and History Talk
Thirty children of the W R C Sunshiners gathered at Mrs Mary J Wood home on First street for an afternoon of hemming tea towels for the W A C and a program led by Mrs Huntington. Foreshell spoke on Mountain Branch Soldiers Home in Tennessee with excerpts from official reports. Readings and musical pieces followed, with neighbors praising Mrs Foreshell and Mrs Hayward as readers. The next Sunshiners meeting is March 1 at 2 pm hosted by Mrs W W Hollingsworth, and Lyceum speaker M J Herbsman set for March 2 with his Life’s Balance Sheet lecture.

Valentine Day Party At Mrs Ryan's Home
Mrs Chas M Ryan entertained a dozen friends at 500 with high and low scores won by Mrs Harry Miller and Mrs Minnie W Cooper. Miller received a vanity box while Cooper took a small basket with a fresh egg and a heart valentine. Luncheon featured heart decorations and a Cupid motif. Piano Recital at Baptist Church Delights Portland Audience
Beatrice Dierke of Portland presented a piano recital Monday night at the Baptist church. Despite bad weather the house was filled with an appreciative crowd. Her program featured Mac Dowell, Liszt, Saint-Saens, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Gabrilowitch, and Moszkowski pieces, with encores and a final reception highlighting her artistry and mastery.

Change in Freight Rates on Lumber to California
The Southern Pacific Company pr oclaims revised carload rates for fir and hemlock lumber from Portland and Willamette Valley to California. Effective March 15, a Portland to San Francisco Oakland Port Costa Davis Sacramento Wheatland Marysville and nearby routes will be 20 cents per 100 lbs, down 14 4 cents from the current rate, with a 2 1/2 cent advance for Willamette Valley points. Some adjustments may be needed for routes south of Sacramento to align with main line changes.

General Funston Dies Suddenl y in San Antonio
Major General Frederick Funston veteran commander of the Southern Department US Army died suddenly in a San Antonio hotel after dinner at age 51. He had directed border forces, the Pershing expedition, and troop realignments since 1915, and had just issued orders for the return of National Guardsmen. Mrs Funston and the three children resided at the Presidio, San Francisco.
