Newberg High beat Forest Grove 33 to 15 in a hard fought local gym contest. Baird starred for Newberg while Forest Grove center T Todd led with 10 of 15 points. The team next travels to Forest Grove and Hillsboro this week with aims for straight victories.

Mountain Top Cleanup Day Brings School House Work and Dinner

On February 10 Mountain Top volunteers gathered at the school under the Parent Teacher Association to remove longstanding stumps, aided by men with teams and dynamiting stunts. Joint Birthday Dinner For Gilbert Family

A Newberg celebration marks J J Gilbert and Mrs John J Gilbert and their son D J Gilbert with a joint birthday dinner on February 12 13. Eighteen relatives attended at the Gilbert residence with meals prepared by the daughter Binford and a grandson. The three ages total 209 years and the family jokes about life insurance prospects.

Farm Loan Association Organized at Fernwood

The first federal farm loan association in Yamhill county was organized at Fernwood near Newberg last Friday. It has 16 charter members seeking a total loan of 26,600 dollars. Board of directors elected includes C. Christenson, A. Everest, R. Robinson, W. Vedder, and W. J. Bennett, with Christenson chosen president.

Surprise Fourth Wedding Anniversary for Mr and Mrs Bartholomew

A group of about twenty friends gathered at the Bartholomews home on Saturday night to surprise Mrs Bartholomew on their fourth wedding anniversary. While she was away, Mr Bartholomew announced the guests and welcomed them upon her return. The party moved between parlor and sitting room as lights were dimmed then raised. After two hours of sociable time refreshments were served and guests departed delighted.

Miss LaVesta Kramien a former Newbery girl married John M Spencer February 4 in Chicago at Buena Memorial Presbyterian Church Rev Henry Hepburn officiated. Attendant was Miss Ferne Mickle of Bloomington and best man was Mr Roy Knudsen of Chicago. Spencer works with stocks and bonds for the Elgin Car Co.

Silver medal contest judged at Friends church

The W C T U Gleanings reports a successful silver medal declamation night at the Friends church. Miss Wills led training and three Pacific College teachers judged, including Miss McCracken, Miss Johnson and Miss Sutton. Contestants Lloyd Wilson won the medal. Della Hanville and Leonard were among the participants.

Recital and Social Evening Follows School Contest

Held at Mrs. Louisa Clark's Fifth Street home a reception honored Miss Wills and her former contesting class. Helen Stanbrough Eleanor Houghton Herbert Van Valin Frances Bassett performed. Willard Bassett sang with mother on piano. Leonard Held Lloyd Wilson sang. Marie Hamilton and Perley recited. A Young People Branch was organized led by Maud Davis and Llewellyn Sanderson. Social hour followed with refreshments.

Bissett Receives O Sweater At O A C Ceremony

Lee Bissett, Newberg high school graduate and ex-captain, was awarded an O sweater by the Oregon Agricultural College athletic association for his contributions to the football team. A junior in agriculture, he has played varsity three years and also plays on the college basketball squad. The presentation occurred before a large crowd at halftime of the Washington O A C football game.

Pleasant surprise party honors Mrs Minnie Byers

A dozen ladies surprised Mrs Minnie Byers for her wedding anniversary last Saturday afternoon. She was about to go to town when guests arrived and shared a social visit of about two hours with refreshments provided by the visitors.

Newberg Defeats Forest Grove 33 to 15 in Friday Victory

The Newberg team beat Forest Grove 33 to 15 with Baird scoring 12 points. The first half ended 15 to 6, and the season saw 196 enrollments this semester compared to 208 last term. The week included a freshman reception, a YWCA book exchange handling about 100 books, and a late-night social.

Merchants Plan Northwest Clearing House to Fight Mail Orders

The Oregon Retail Merchants Association prepares for a three day Portland meeting February 19 to 21 to curb mail order business in the Northwest. A $10,000 fund is expected to start a clearing house with branches to serve every community and standardize products to support growers profits. Pruning Demonstrations Scheduled Across Local Orchards

Farm notes announce next week devoted to pruning, with demonstrations at Schand Bros. orchard near Rex on Monday the 19th Kenneth Miller orchard north of Sheridan on Tuesday the 20th Roy Graves orchard south of Sheridan on Wednesday the 21st and near Yamhill on Thursday the 22nd.
