The new mayor urges a charter amendment to allow general city tax levies for universal municipal needs while limiting reliance on restricted funds. He proposes a citizens commission to address revenue, warns about sidewalk safety, and promises fair, accountable governance with committees responsible for their work.
At a city council meeting on Monday night Mayor Larkin announced the committees for the year. Finance includes Silver Fendall and Moore. Water lists Hollingsworth Road Silver. Streets are Sutton Moore and Hollingsworth. Sidewalks include Moore Sutton and Fendall. Police and Public Property are Fendall Hollingsworth and Rood. Public Health and Elections include Rood Sutton Silver Keeney as marshal Ireland street commissioner Ridenour water and Dr Rankin health officer. all were reelected.
The W R C will serve a general dinner after the Washington's birthday program on February 22 at 1 0. O. PF hall at noon. Price 25 cents. By order of committee.
Ray Goodrich 36, vice president of the First Nazi Bank of Eugene and University of Oregon regent, died in Boston after brain surgery. He was a local native, Oregon Agricultural College and University of Oregon graduate, and a key civic figure. He leaves wife Ruby and daughter Martha.
The semi monthly North Main Club met at Shady Glen, Mrs. Moffatt hosting. Mrs. T Jones read a paper on The Early History of Oregon with extra interest from the Rev Jason Lees bride being her aunt. An original talk on Domestic Science in the Kitchen with demonstrations followed. The February 14 meeting will be an open social at Bon-Accord House, B F Bixby hosting a Southern Dinner.
Dundee schools show strong results with R L Henry developing both boys and girls into winners through applied physiology and home credit teaching. Spring Brook’s Miss Olive Ramsey leads the primary department while Laura Judy manages the Rex and Fernwood schools as progress grows. a rally marks the week’s end and Rex plans a hall for a city project.
Sam Hess, living near Sherwood, was struck unconscious by his nephew Tom Hess, an inmate at large earlier that night. After escaping the cabin, Hess sought aid and was questioned by Sheriff Applegate before Tom Hess was confined to the state hospital following a court hearing.
Beatrice Dierke, renowned concert pianist from Portland, will give a recital at the Baptist church in Newberg on February 19. Local management by Miss Jessie Britt includes prominent town matrons as patronesses and a growing subscription list. Grand piano loaned by Mrs. Dwight Coulson. Tickets 50 cents adults, 35 cents students, 25 cents children with parents. sales start at Kienle's Music Store after February 12.
The Civic Club ladies and Commercial Club men plan socials on the third Friday of each month. The first event is Friday February 16 at 8 pm. Ladies should bring an old hat frame, trimming materials, thread and needle packed with their name inside for use during the evening. Committee invites all members and spouses.
Friday at 2 p m is a ministry and oversight meeting. At 7 p m a temperance conference and medal contest for children aged 5 to 8. 7 30 p m Pacific College Board at the college. Saturday 10 30 worship service 1 30 p m business meeting 7 30 p m evangelistic conference Sunday 11 a m worship service.
Local high school basketball team has five straight wins and aims for six as Forest Grove visits Friday night. Students and supporters pack the home gym to watch the action.
The county agriculturist announces next year’s major and minor farm projects including marketing silos herd improvement organization crop rotation farm accounts and loans pruning spraying and rodent control. Pruning demonstrations begin in February with groups of ten or more. spraying demos follow.
