A newspaper note traces the poem O Why Should the Spirit of Mortal Be Proud , a Lincoln favorite, and credits William Knox as the likely author. The verses contemplate mankind’s mortality and the universality of death across ranks and ages, with the final line attributed to Knox.
The text notes a Friday 2 pm ministry and oversight meeting followed by an Alaska exhibit and a reception for Mr and Mrs A C Martin who served three years in Alaska. Rev Charles E Tebbetts will speak at Saturday morning service and again during the afternoon business session and night program.
Prof. Launer will speak in Mr. Harger's building Tuesday night February 11 at 7 45 to explain why he left the Prohibition party and joined the Socialist movement. All are invited to attend this talk.
At a regular meeting the council confirmed a street sweeping contract to T. H. Thorne at 65 dollars per month and appointed Mrs. C. B. Wilsop to the library board. New officers include James Ferguson as street commissioner and J. F. Ridenour as water superintendent with S. A. Mills acting mayor.
Harvard Peabody Museum receive assertion by archaeologist Charles Hallock that Cain son of Adam founded the first American city near Klamath Oregon named Enock, with Asia fleeing to escape the flood. The report discusses the Enock region and its significance.
About a dozen blacksmiths from Yamhill county met at the city hall to appoint delegates Frank Chown McMinnville Jack Postle Lafayette and T A Wilson Sheridan to a Portland convention. They aim to transfer Portland from Washington to Oregon for state association protection and improved customer obligations.
A cross church and school group met at the Commercial Club to organize a social service effort for Newberg youth. G O Bassit chaired the meeting and officers were elected with Bert Miller as secretary. A special committee was formed to locate a central HQ to engage young people.
Grace Newell and Francis A. Morris wed February 2 at the bride’s home in Newberg in a simple ring ceremony conducted by Rev. Charles O. Whitely. The couple’s reception dinner followed at the Imperial hotel. Morris, longtime Newberg resident and member of The Newberg Land Co, and Newell, Iowa native who moved to Newberg last year, reside in the Morris cottage at College and Third streets undergoing repairs.
Flora Katherine Barkley born December 31 1870 in Grayson County Texas daughter of J G and J D Barkley converted at 15 joined the M E church later affiliated with Evangelical church Hillsboro Oregon married Louis Nier man in 1890 after his death lived in Tualatin Oregon until 1905 when she married D A Miller Hillsboro She leaves a husband two daughters a son mother three sisters and three brothers she died January 30 1913 at Newberg Oregon. Judge George H Burnett of Salem will visit the local lodge Saturday night.
