Families Separated By Fire Ravaging Fernie District
A Fernie dispatch reports Spokane readers that over 7,000 people lost homes in the fire area with up to 100 dead feared. Two thousand sent west to Cranbrook and Elko, 1,500 fled northward, and trains carried evacuees west. Losses top $2.5 million with about $1.5 million insured. About 3,000 housed yesterday, 3,500 more to need shelter and food.

Miner Dies Beneath Sutro Tunnel in Nevada
In Virginia City on August 4 a miner named C Pucillini was found dead half a mile underground at a depth of 8 000 feet from the Sutro tunnel entrance. His four mules also perished from the oppressive heat in the mine.

According to reports at the railroad commission in Salem four persons were killed in June in the state. Thirteen passengers were injured along with one trainman one yardman and two other employees. One passenger train derailed and two freight trains derailed. There was one collision between a passenger train and another collision between a passenger train and a freight train.
