The local Red Cross plans a May Day program on Wednesday afternoon May 1 featuring a parade at 1:00, crownings, maypole winding, and a high school patriotic drill. Local businesses have signed on floats and sponsors for the parade with expected strong participation.
Mrs Harriet Dobbins wife of Levi Dobbins Civil War veteran died at her home in Newberg at Fourth and Lincoln Saturday morning after a lingering illness aged nearly 72 born July 27 1846 in Fulton county Indiana married at Iowa City February 28 1867 and had seven children four of whom predeceased her Amos S Ralph Jessie and G Docia Ida A and Viola V survived by husband and sons the funeral was held at the residence Monday afternoon conducted by the Women's Relief Corps in which she served twelve years and she was laid to rest in Friends cemetery
Miss Mary E Pennington of Pacific College earned second place in the State Prohibition Contest held at Eugene Bible University. First went to Faye Bolin of Willamette University. other entrants included Chris Benny Clyde Thurston and Frederick Parkes. The interstate contest will be at Willamette University. next year's state contest at Salem with Miss Fay Wells as president.
Graphic and Semi weekly Journal reports Oregon hosts sale of thrift and war savings stamps. Local buyers join effort supported by state authorities to fund wartime programs and encourage savings through stamped securities.
Corvallis Oregon April 24 reports unconfirmed rumors that formaldehyde used to treat seed grain in Canada harmed seed. Prof H P Barss of O A C says the issue is unlikely and mis treatment or careless handling is to blame. Extension Bulletin 292 outlines smut control with safe seed treatment. free on request.
Mrs Katherine Glen Kerry a song writer and soloist and Mrs Eva Hummer Hall pianist attracted a large audience at Wood Mar Hall Friday night. Kerry sang with clearness and precision with faultless high tones and mellow low tones. Her compositions drew praise while Hull displayed brilliance at the piano. Both received encores and a reception followed. The evening's receipts netted the Red Cross about 50 dollars.
A recital is scheduled for Monday May 6 at 8 o clock in Wood Mar Hall featuring Miss Blythe Owen Mildred Ferguson and Melba Sanders with Prof Alexander Hull presenting a short lecture on Edward MacDowell. Miss Owen will perform two movements of the Keltic Sonata and a selection of shorter pieces. Music lovers are invited.
The lyceum course closes next Thursday at 8:30 PM with Prof. Edmond S. Meany of the University of Washington as speaker. His address will be titled Two Heroes of the Northwest.
A service flag will be unfurled at Odd Fellows hall on Sunday at 2 30 for ten local I O O F members in service: C H Coe Robert Patterson Barry Groth Ernest Duncan Dr J S Rankin Seth B Dodge Jr Frank Sharp Rudolph Wenger Wm McLish Fred Lundeen The program includes piano solo verse children song address and vocal numbers to honor the roll call and flag ceremony.

On May 2 a Champoeg Day event marks the 75th anniversary of the Oregon provisional government formation. A new Colonial design building at Champoeg will be dedicated, with a 19 by 25 foot reception hall and cobblestone fireplace, plus an exhibition room and storage space. The project faces funding limits. a plan to add an open-air auditorium is paused. A steamer Pomona will shuttle attendees from Oregon City to Champoeg at 7:30 a.m., with Oregon Electric trains linking to the boat.
