May Day Red Cross Program Planned in Town

The local Red Cross plans a May Day program on Wednesday afternoon May 1 featuring a parade at 1:00, crownings, maypole winding, and a high school patriotic drill. Local businesses have signed on floats and sponsors for the parade with expected strong participation.

Obituary of Mrs Harriet Dobbins in Newberg

Mrs Harriet Dobbins wife of Levi Dobbins Civil War veteran died at her home in Newberg at Fourth and Lincoln Saturday morning after a lingering illness aged nearly 72 born July 27 1846 in Fulton county Indiana married at Iowa City February 28 1867 and had seven children four of whom predeceased her Amos S Ralph Jessie and G Docia Ida A and Viola V survived by husband and sons the funeral was held at the residence Monday afternoon conducted by the Women's Relief Corps in which she served twelve years and she was laid to rest in Friends cemetery

Pennington Places Second in State Prohibition Contest

Miss Mary E Pennington of Pacific College earned second place in the State Prohibition Contest held at Eugene Bible University. First went to Faye Bolin of Willamette University. other entrants included Chris Benny Clyde Thurston and Frederick Parkes. The interstate contest will be at Willamette University. next year's state contest at Salem with Miss Fay Wells as president.

Kerry Soloist Please Audience in Wood-Mar Hall Recital

Mrs Katherine Glen Kerry a song writer and soloist and Mrs Eva Hummer Hall pianist attracted a large audience at Wood Mar Hall Friday night. Kerry sang with clearness and precision with faultless high tones and mellow low tones. Her compositions drew praise while Hull displayed brilliance at the piano. Both received encores and a reception followed. The evening's receipts netted the Red Cross about 50 dollars.

Pacific Defeats McMinnville In Season Baseball

Pacific beat McMinnville 7 to 5 in the season opener. Ezra Hinshaw doubled and scored twice despite a sprained ankle, Elliott added key two and three base hits, and Harold Hinshaw plus Carter contributed later runs as Pacific led 7 to 5 after eight innings and held on in the ninth.

Champoeg Day Celebrations Mark 75th Oregon Provisional Gov�t

On May 2 a Champoeg Day event marks the 75th anniversary of the Oregon provisional government formation. A new Colonial design building at Champoeg will be dedicated, with a 19 by 25 foot reception hall and cobblestone fireplace, plus an exhibition room and storage space. The project faces funding limits. a plan to add an open-air auditorium is paused. A steamer Pomona will shuttle attendees from Oregon City to Champoeg at 7:30 a.m., with Oregon Electric trains linking to the boat.
