From France Meade G Elliott recounts German dugouts in early French fighting zones. He describes multi story, decorated halls with telephones and electric light, a medieval style chateau with gardens and dungeon, a moving picture show deep underground, and ruined villages along the front with desolate battlegrounds.

Amos Nelson long time Chehalem Valley resident and former county commissioner died Tuesday night at his home near Newberg after a paralytic illness. He served as county commissioner 1892 to 1896 and was vice president of the First National Bank for years. Born June 6, 1848 on Fyen island Denmark he immigrated to the United States at 22 and lived in Iowa St Louis Nevada and Oregon before settling in Chehalem Valley in 1881. Funeral services Friday at 1 PM at W W Hollingsworth Co chapel conducted by Rev. F C Stannard.

Mrs N M Stevenson captivates with singing. audience large and receptive. expect bright results as gospel of Christ is preached plainly and fully. Committee invites all to attend.
The May Day Red Cross contest invites candidates from schools clubs and individuals with a one cent vote fee. Votes are sold at three city drug stores with a 10 30 pm April 27 deadline. Daily tallies will be posted on the post office bulletin board as the community votes to support the war effort.
All day Red Cross sewing event by the W C T U unit and a separate entertainment by Miss Jessie E Britt at Chehalem Center schoolhouse on April 23 at 8 o clock. Tickets 10 and 25 cents with free admission for children under six. Mrs C A Morris Miss Bassett and others perform with piano solos and tableaux. Tea served. bring a tea cup and spoon.
Miss Zella M. Dimmock married Mr. Fred A. Williams at the First Church of the Nazarene in Newberg on April 14. The couple, joining the town’s second war bridal pair, received bystanders’ best wishes after a Mendelssohn ceremony and a reception. Mrs. Williams teaches in Newberg public schools. Williams serves in the 44th U. S. Infantry at Camp Lewis Tacoma. Guests came from Southern Oregon, Salem, and beyond.
Vegetable growers are invited to a Growers Meeting in Cannery Assembly Hall at 10 o clock Saturday. Prof Bouquet of O A C will discuss vegetable care for summer and fall markets. Mr Newmeyer of the Boys Working Reserve will outline help for harvesting and contracting for beans and corn. Light lunch at noon.

A subscriber condemns public school boys smoking cigarettes and urges adherence to cigarette laws. The note cites U S Surgeon General Rixey linking tuberculosis in the navy to cigarette use and calls for promoting true manhood and health.

Lloyd Edwards, a Pacific College graduate and Vancouver shipyard electrician, wed Stella Gayne of Tillamook after a rapid ceremony at his grandparents’ Newberg home. The couple then traveled to Portland for a wedding dinner.
Yamhill County hosts a series of free illustrated lectures by Prof T D Beckwith bacteriologist of Oregon Agricultural College on flies and sanitation. Lectures include Pomona Grange McMinnville April 24 at 3 30 pm and visits to Unionvale West Chehalem Yamhill Carlton April 25 26. Public invited.
