News from Castries and Pointe-a-Pitre report La Souffrière volcano on St Vincent erupting violently. Flames scorch the northern third of the island while lava and ash blanket areas up to 150 miles away. Three hundred lives feared lost at St Pierre, Martinique, and officials seek relief.
The Korona arrived with survivors from the Roraima after a volcanic eruption at St Pierre and a seawater surge destroyed Port de France and surrounding towns. Deaths include the island’s governor and many consuls. few escapees remain amid fires, ash, and widespread devastation.
In Martinique on May 10 officials say earthquakes ceased and eruptions continue. Hope grows that more residents have been saved from St Pierre, with steamers ferrying people to Fort de France. Debris clearing will start once entry is possible, and corpses will be burned. Relief supplies and medical aid are being sent as food stocks are ruined. The cruiser Suchet is revictualling from Guadeloupe.
Paris reports via the Patrie that Morne Rouge, a resort between St Pierre and Mont Pelée, was spared. A cable from Fort de France says property is safe and that Morne Rouge escaped destruction, with the area normally hosting thousands in season and hundreds of residents in calmer months.
The Italian steamer Pedamonta reports that near St. Vincent her deck was buried two inches in ash and passengers nearly suffocated by sulphur odor. Subterranean noises were heard along the coast especially in the gulf of Paria, terrorizing the Indians.

Dozens perished and ships ashore suffered. Survivors report massive loss as telegraph lines fail and the town is utterly destroyed.
Professor J Stoddard Bellew of Salt Lake City High School visited St Pierre Martinique and observed the volcano Mont Pelée from near the summit. He noted hot crater ground and predicted widespread destruction for nearby towns if the eruption expanded.
The French cruiser Tage, now in New Orleans, has been ordered to Martinique with all possible speed. She recently arrived here from St. Pierre.
Thousands line Seventh Avenue and Central Park area for the Road Drivers' Association annual parade. About four hundred light harness vehicles move to the Speedway under Marshal guidance led by Alexander Newburger. Police and city officials view the procession, and Mounted Policeman Isaac H. Weiner receives a gold medal for bravely aiding in a runaway rescue. The event features a comic horse moment and a color run, with spectators estimated between forty and seventy-five thousand.

Catalonia rebels at central rule while Barcelona and Castilian centers prepare public fêtes and a week of ceremonies including oaths, banquets, and a grand bullfight with royal approval.
