First direct defense testimony aimed to show Harry Orchard threatened Steunenberg and that Orchard and Sterling both before and after the Independence explosion tied to mine owners’ plot. London June 25 The House of Commons spent the whole sitting debating Premier Campbell Bannerman’s motion to curtail the Lords powers and an amendment by A Henderson Labour from Durham urging abolition The debate featured leaders Alfred Lyttelton and Winston Churchill and showed the government determined to press its anti Lords campaign No division yet.
In Moukden on June 25 Japan acts to defend treaty rights by pressuring China to reopen talks on a timber dispute. Manchurian timber operations halt with 10 000 lumbermen idle. 3 000 rafts used and 6 000 involved. General Kojima seeks order amid feared disorder. China supports a large timber company. Japan shifts from compromise to force.
Governor Hughes ordered an investigation into pollution from pulp and sulphite mills in Fort Edward and Glens Falls. Dr. Eugene Porter will hold a public hearing at Fort Edward on July 8 after riparian owners testified that acids harmed fish and made water unfit for use.
General Frederick Funston cites dissension in the Fourth of July committee and says he supports unions while noting threats and disorder. The committee decides to hold no parade and rejects his claim that troops would be unsafe, aiming to avoid conflict in the city.
A building collapse at Lafayette and Walker streets killed seven workers and injured others. George Blumenthal, in charge of alterations, faced homicide charges with bail set at 25000 dollars. Authorities pledge a grand jury review and a full bureau investigation.
Berlin dispatch reports Crown Prince George of Servia narrowly escaped death while rowing alone. Approaching the Hungarian shore officials demanded boat inspection. the prince refused and headed for the Servian side, reaching safety as bullets whizzed around.

Immigrant handling officials including Immigration Commissioner Watchorn met with nearly all railroads at the Clearing House to plan a new rate schedule and improved equipment and terminal facilities. Watchorn said a new schedule is coming and railroads will take proper care of immigrant passengers as he heads to Washington for related business.

Ten illicit distillers were killed and thirty prisoners taken after a mountain battle with revenue officers near Asheville. Four thousand gallons of whiskey seized. Five officers wounded. Women and children accompanied prisoners to jail. The attack had been planned for months.
